Track R
Track Chair:Filippo Cavallo, Dr., ScuolaSuperiore Sant’Anna

Trackrationale

The focus of the track is on robotics and assistant living fromevery perspective. The assistive technologies are part of activeageing and independent living; there is a need and demand for new, smart solutions.

In this track you will hear the expert speakers and have thepossibility to join the discussions on AAL subjects andtechnologies. The speakers are carefully chosen in order tointroduce you to the possibilities and needs related to the changein society and the growing elderly population. Views on how toprioritize now and in the future will be presented, as well asviews on subjects such as ethical perspectives when caring forelderly with dementia or other special needs of care. Be introducedto assistive technologies and thoughts on training andrehabilitation, economy, investment, market and consumerneeds.

The elderly population is growing, thus new solutions andtechnologies are in high demand.

The key question often is; ‘What can we afford?’ but should itrather be; ‘Can we afford not to?’…

R1: World Map of Robotics Enabled (and Ambient) AssistedLiving

SessionRationale

With a focus on market analysis and investment in an AmbientAssisted Living perspective, this session will give a broadintroduction to the topic by presenting a road map, the economicaspects, statistics and prognoses as well as consumer trendsarising from the needs of an ageing population.

Speakers

Chair: Filippo Cavallo, Dr., Scuola SuperioreSant’Anna

R2: Local Danish AAL players

SessionRationale

The conference room is a bus which will take you on a guided tourto the local Danish key players on Robotics, Health Care andWelfare in Southern Denmark, situated in the Research Park ofOdense. You will see where the work is done, get a presentation ofprojects and have the opportunity to touch and try thetechnologies. On this tour you will meet University of SouthernDenmark (research), Danish Technological Institute (innovationprocess) and Region of Southern Denmark (living lab, userengagement and test)

Speakers

Chair: Claus Risager, Head of centre, DanishTechnological Institute

R3: Social human-robot interaction and Ethics

SessionRationale

Is an automatic bath cabin to be comparable to a carwash where theresidents of, say, a nursing home, will get their daily bath in amechanised manner without human contact and care? Or can a bathcabin be a dignified alternative to the current solutions? Is therobotic seal Paro an affront to ourcare of people with dementia? Or is Paro an essential complement to thesocio-educational and therapeutic care for people withdementia?

The ethical issues are important and several in relation to a widerange of welfare technologies that become increasingly widespreadin the public welfare sector in the coming years. Most recently, the Danish Council of Ethics published a report on social robotswhich concluded, among other things, that we should usetechnologies in order to save human resources for services thatrequire real human contact, namely caring through human company, conversation, tenderness and touching. But where will it allend? And how do we ensure that socialrobots are used appropriately and not at the expense of humancontact?

R4: Tele-robotics, Logistic services, Socialservices

SessionRationale

The new technologies give people the possibility to extend the timethey live in their own homes, due to a higher degree of autonomy. The assistive technologies give the end users an increased feelingof security and support the carers. This session gives a broadpresentation of the newest technologies within the field of AmbientAssisted Living to be used in the health care system and in privatehomes.

R5: Rehabilitation, Training, Assistive Technologies

SessionRationale

The use of assistive technologies for rehabilitation and traininghave over the past several years beenone of major issues, especially in the elderly caresector.

Many professionals in the elder care field have attempted to definethe concept of rehabilitation and grappled with the challenge offormulating a practical strategy to the benefit of elderly peoplein the community.

There are many ways to work with rehabilitation, which can besummarised as follows: you must again be the boss of your own life! You must train and rehearse to again be able to help yourself andlive independently.

The session will include some exciting presentations for discussionand inspiration.
