Track rationale for the AAL Forum 2010

In the Ambient Assisted Living JP the objective is to support the autonomy and independence of older people in different aspects of life with smart solutions. On the one hand autonomy & independence is meant to improve the quality of life for older people, on the other hand societies nééd older people to be independent and to take care of themselves and each other as much as possible to keep the health and social systems sustainable.

User engagement
To realize these objectives, the first condition is that older people want and accept the products and services that will be developed and introduced to the market; they must be desirable, have added value for them and offer meaningful contacts/relationships.

This track will be dedicated to make clear the relevance of user engagement in the development process of solutions for older people (the ‘why’ question). To fulfil real needs instead of assumed needs, to realise desirable products and services of good quality and for economic growth.
Next to that examples of good practices, projects, showcases, toolkits will be presented to show ‘how’ real user engagement can be achieved.

Please can AAL designers also take into account carers as important users of AAL systems - professional carers and family carers are the front line users of most of these systems, as users themselves, providing support to elderly users, and having their lives directly affected by the presence of these technologies, which are generally meant to substitute or complement work they they do.
